Basic Training, Summer

This report details the training I did under Allan Beauchamp during this past summer. In total, I spent 4 weekends of the summer training with Bow. The first three focused on basic skills and smarts training, such as:

SKILLS

  • Edible plants

  • Water procurement
  • Fire starting: Flint & Steel
  • Fire starting: Bowdrill
  • Fire starting: Intro to Hand-drills
  • Cordage
  • Primitive Weapons: Throwing Sticks
  • Primitive Weapons: Selecting wood for bows & Bow-making

SMARTS

  • Tracking
  • Awareness & Natural Indicators
  • Natural Navigation
  • Camouflage & Concealment
  • Cataloguing
  • Snares

The fourth weekend was a test of these skills. Nothing rigid and formal. It was still a training weekend. As usual, we were in the bush. There was no sterilized classroom test here. All bush. Lucky me, there was a downpour that day 3 hours before I had to make a fire with a bowdrill. The test required me to make a new bow and board in the bush. The only pre-made pieces I could bring were the string for my bow, the bearing block, and the leather pad I carry my fireboard kit in.
